Science Communication & Diplomacy Conference 2024

The Science Communication and Diplomacy Conference, organized by the Scientists of Kenya Association – SCOKA in partnership with the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Nairobi, was held on October 15-16, 2024, at University Towers. This pivotal event gathered a diverse array of participants, including representatives from research centers, government agencies, science communicators, academicians, professionals, and students, all dedicated to enhancing the dialogue
between science and society. The conference served as a platform for discussing the importance of effective science communication and its role in fostering public understanding and engagement with scientific research.

Central to the conference’s agenda was the recognition that effective communication is vital for making scientific knowledge accessible to non-specialists. Participants engaged in various sessions that emphasized the need for clarity, relatability, and engagement when conveying complex scientific concepts. The conference featured workshops that focused on essential skills such as storytelling in science, visual communication techniques, and the use of social media as a tool for outreach. These
sessions aimed to empower attendees with practical strategies to communicate their research findings in ways that resonate with broader audiences, thereby demystifying science and making it more approachable.

Panel discussions were a highlight of the conference, bringing together experts from various fields to share insights and experiences related to science communication. Topics addressed included the challenges scientists face in reaching non-scientific audiences, the critical role of science communication in influencing public policy and health decisions, and the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. These discussions fostered an environment of knowledge exchange, encouraging participants to reflect on their communication practices and the impact of their work on society.

The conference also provided ample opportunities for networking and collaboration. Participants were encouraged to connect during informal breaks and structured networking sessions, facilitating discussions that could lead to future partnerships and collaborative projects. Research presentations allowed attendees to showcase their work while receiving feedback on their communication strategies, further enhancing the overall learning experience.

In conclusion, the Science Communication and Diplomacy Conference was a significant step towards bridging the gap between scientists and the public. By equipping participants with the tools and knowledge necessary for effective science communication, the conference aimed to promote scientific literacy and informed decision-making within society. The collaborative efforts of the Kenya Association of Scientists and the University of Nairobi underscored a shared commitment to advancing science communication in Kenya, ensuring that scientific knowledge is not only produced but also effectively shared and understood by all.
